San Marcos based Hunter Industries built their headquarter last year to be LEED certified. LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, and is a voluntary standard set forth by the U.S. Green Building Council. To become LEED certified, there is a long list of specifications to consider, ranging from proximity to public transportation, to use of recycled materials for the construction of the building. A large solar array is installed on the roof, half of which powers the building, and the other half is owned by SDGE and the energry goes back to the grid. Though meeting the standards to be LEED certified added 10% to the cost of the building, they expect the energy saving features to pay for themselves within about 5 years. Thank you Hunter Industries for your efforts to be “green.”
