    The Risks of Non-Sustainable Energy

Filed under: San Diego Solar Blog — tony @ 10:29 am

In President Obama’s (it is nice to finally be able to say that) inauguration speech, he reminded us of the problems of our energy dependence. In his words “…each day brings further evidence that the ways we use energy strengthen our adversaries and threaten our planet.” While contemplating Obama’s speech, I remembered hearing about a billion dollar LNG (liquified natural gas) plant that was complete in Baja California, Mexico.

This plant was built by Sempra, and imports the LNG from Indonesia. T Boone Pickens is telling us that by using natural gas, we will reduce our dependance on foreign energy. However, billion dollar natural gas importing facilities are popping up, and they expect to see a rise in natural gas demand to pay for their shiny new endeavor.

More than every, we need to keep those dollar here in the U.S. Instead of sending them overseas, we can buy boost our own economy by investing in solar and other renewable energy sources that create jobs, and saves folks money at the same time.

    Hunter Industries, “LEED” by Example

Filed under: San Diego Solar Blog — tony @ 10:31 am

hunter-logo-greySan Marcos based Hunter Industries built their headquarter last year to be LEED certified. LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, and is a voluntary standard set forth by the U.S. Green Building Council. To become LEED certified, there is a long list of specifications to consider, ranging from proximity to public transportation, to use of recycled materials for the construction of the building. A large solar array is installed on the roof, half of which powers the building, and the other half is owned by SDGE and the energry goes back to the grid. Though meeting the standards to be LEED certified added 10% to the cost of the building, they expect the energy saving features to pay for themselves within about 5 years. Thank you Hunter Industries for your efforts to be “green.”

Filed under: San Diego Solar Blog — tony @ 10:34 am

obamaObama has set an aggressive, but much needed goal, to double the production of altenative energy in the United States, within three years. The plan involves modernization of 75% of government buildings, as well as improvin the energy efficiency of two million American homes. If Obama and his administration is able to follow through on these goals, and puts appropriate amounts of money toward tax incentives, rebates, and funding of projects, thousands of jobs will be created, giving a much needed boost to our economy. It is time for the United States to take the lead on promoting renewable energy, for the sake of the environment, as well as the recovery of our economy.
